Project Description
Unanimous Passage of the Privacy Advisory Ordinance
The Transparent and Responsible Use of Surveillance Technology San Diego (TRUST SD) Coalition was originally formed to address the widespread and secretive use, installation, and acquisition of the Smart Streetlights technology that was deployed all over San Diego County, and is made up of more than 30 local community organizations that represent various sectors of our communities.
On April 5th, 2022, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to enact a municipal privacy advisory board ordinance, which goes hand in hand with the Surveillance Oversight Ordinance. The Privacy Advisory Board ordinance advocates for community perspectives when surveillance technology is proposed and includes seats for representatives of communities historically impacted by surveillance. It will also allow community members to offer their input on the use of technology at Privacy Advisory Board meetings.
We had a major step today. City Council unanimously passed the Privacy Advisory Board ordinance! So many of you called in to urge a speedy adoption of the Oversight ordinance — the one that gives council and residents power — with no amendments.
