Project Description
PrOTECT Ordinance → A solution for ending racial profiling
MoGo is a proud member of the Coalition for Police Accountability and Transparency (CPAT). Law enforcement agencies must be held accountable for abusing their power in ways that disproportionately impact communities of color. Police violence cannot be effectively addressed without completely reimagining how police operate, including a significant reduction in the role, responsibilities, and presence of police in the everyday lives of populations of over-policed communities. Elected leaders must work with community members to craft and adopt solutions.
CPAT is a group of diverse community, faith, and labor stakeholders who are committed to working for justice, accountability, divestment from policing, and investment in non-police alternatives.
Currently, CPAT is hoping to get our PrOTECT Ordinance passed.
What is the PrOTECT Ordinance?
Preventing Overpolicing Through Equitable Community Treatment Ordinance.
- Require police officers to have probable cause to stop or search anyone, including Fourth Waivers – people on probation or parole who have waived some of their Fourth Amendment rights
- Require probable cause for searches
- Prohibit officers from questioning people about any offenses beyond the offense for which they were stopped unless the officers have probable cause
- Hold officers accountable if they violate the ordinance
Read an op-ed by MoGo’s Executive Director Geneviéve Jones-Wright and Julia Yoo, on biased policing in San Diego, and why we need to pass PrOTECT here.
Biased policing in San Diego has to stop. We must pass PrOTECT to curb racial profiling. Urge San Diego City Council and Mayor Todd Gloria to pass PrOTECT! Enough is enough. #EndTheStops @CPATSanDiego
