Project Description
Unanimous Passage of the Surveillance Oversight Ordinance
The Transparent and Responsible Use of Surveillance Technology San Diego (TRUST SD) Coalition was originally formed to address the widespread and secretive use, installation, and acquisition of the Smart Streetlights technology that was deployed all over San Diego County, and is made up of more than 30 local community organizations that represent various sectors of our communities.
After 3 years of tireless effort of 30+ community organizations, including MoGo, the San Diego City Council unanimously gave final approval to a new privacy and technology ordinance that will place the City’s surveillance technology under its oversight on August 2nd, 2022 – The Surveillance Oversight Ordinance.
The passage of the TRUST SD Coalition’s surveillance oversight ordinance is a big Community win for all of San Diego, as it and calls for transparency through community member input, and means the creation of a community-led Privacy Advisory Board.
As MoGo’s Executive Director Geneviéve Jones-Wright expressed, “These victories were hard fought by the Community. They serve as perfect examples of how impacted community members can be — and why they should be — a part of policy creation. Without the vigilance of the TRUST coalition coupled with the leadership of Council President Pro Tem Monica Montgomery Steppe, the City would still be failing San Diegans and its visitors.”
WE DID IT! 🎉🎊 Today, @SDCityCouncil passed the TRUST ordinance into law. We now have Council oversight over the City's surveillance technologies, advised by the Privacy Advisory Board and a public process. Thank you @cd4monica for championing this from the beginning!
